Our mission at Guitar North Florida is to inspire individuals with life-changing musical experiences, connecting the people in our community with the positively transformative power of music through student education programs and
expressive performances by talented artists with an emphasis on classical guitar.
Our vision is to become the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to guitar
in Florida and the Southeastern United States.
The inspiration for Guitar North Florida came from TJ Ryan, a dedicated guitar student now studying at FSU, who noticed that only a handful of high schools in North Florida offer classroom guitar programs. He imagined that if more schools embraced such programs, it would lead not only to more opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds and for guitar teachers and performers, but also likely to expand the audience for guitar music events in the region. TJ set out to help make this dream a reality — hoping these benefits might unfold by the time he completes his studies.
The organization’s initial financial foundation was established through a modest inheritance gifted to TJ by his paternal grandmother, Hazel Wainwright Ryan, whose vivacious spirit and love for music as a pianist sparked his own musical passion and ultimately inspired the mission of our organization.
Hazel's legacy of joy and generosity continues to echo in every chord struck and every program launched by Guitar North Florida.
Our guidance and oversight are entrusted to a volunteer Board of Directors. Our directors serving on our board come from an array of backgrounds, which include community leaders, guitar educators, guitar artists, students, and representatives from local organizations.

Our Teaching Artists
Jacob Spangler is a classical guitarist, composer, and educator based in Jacksonville, Florida. With a background that blends classical training, six years of military service, and nearly a decade of teaching experience, he brings a grounded, student-centered approach to music education. Jacob earned his bachelor’s degree in music from Stetson University and has taught privately, in after-school programs, and at School of Rock, in addition to working as GNF's first Teaching Artist. He works with students of all ages and skill levels.
Having lived and worked abroad for several years, Jacob developed a deep appreciation for how music builds confidence and community. He is passionate about helping schools recognize the unique accessibility and transformative potential of guitar education, believing that because the guitar is such an approachable and culturally familiar instrument, it can open doors for students who might otherwise never see themselves reflected in the arts. For Jacob, the guitar is a bridge that expands opportunity and helps all students find a place to belong.
